Eynsford is a village and civil parish in Kent’s Sevenoaks District, nestled within the Darent Valley. The village is known for its picturesque ford over the River Darent, accompanied by a charming hump-back bridge. Historic buildings such as the 16th-century Plough Inn and the Old Mill add character to the curved High Street. The medieval Church of St Martin stands as a notable landmark, linked to Thomas Becket’s excommunication of William de Eynsford in the 12th century.
Eynsford Castle, dating from 1088, is one of England’s most complete Norman castles and is now managed by English Heritage. Nearby, Lullingstone Castle, a 15th-century manor house, has royal connections and was the birthplace of lawn tennis rules in 1875. Its grounds feature the World Garden of Plants, a unique walled garden designed as a map of the world, created by Tom Hart Dyke.
The parish also hosts Lullingstone Roman Villa, discovered in 1939, which showcases some of Britain’s finest Roman remains, including a Romano-Christian chapel. Wildlife in the area includes diverse butterfly and bird species, particularly on the western slopes near Lullingstone Golf Course.
Eynsford has a rich cultural history, having been home to notable figures such as composer Peter Warlock and artist Graham Sutherland. It has also featured in television productions, including the ITV comedy drama The Larkins, which used the village as a filming location.
Transport links include Eynsford railway station, offering services to London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks, and local bus routes connecting to Sevenoaks and Swanley. The village’s Baptist Church dates back to 1775, with the current building completed in 1906.
