About Fairfield, Kent

Fairfield is a small village in Kent, situated on Walland Marsh, part of the Romney Marsh area. It lies west of the village of Brookland and forms part of the parish of Snargate. The village is notable for its rural and isolated setting.

The Church of St Thomas à Becket is Fairfield’s most prominent historic feature. This 15th-century church, built on the site of an earlier building, stands alone amid open marshland and is accessible only by footpath. Its remote location has made it a popular subject for photographers, artists, and writers.

The church’s interior, with distinctive white panelling and black furnishings, inspired artist John Piper in designing the prayer room at Nuffield College, Oxford. It has also appeared in film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The Church of St Thomas à Becket is a Grade I listed building, reflecting its architectural and historic significance.
