Faversham is a historic market town in Kent, located near the Swale estuary, about 48 miles from London and 10 miles from Canterbury. Its origins date back to pre-Roman times, with Roman remains such as a 2,000-year-old theatre discovered nearby. The town’s name likely means “the metal-worker’s village,” reflecting its ancient roots.
King Stephen founded Faversham Abbey in 1148, making the town significant during his reign. Although the abbey was dissolved in the 16th century, landmarks like St Mary of Charity Church, with its distinctive spire, remain central to the town’s heritage. Abbey Street, known for its timber-framed medieval buildings, is considered one of the finest medieval streets in southeast England.
Faversham was once a centre for the explosives industry, with six factories operating until a tragic explosion in 1916 led to its decline. The town also has a long brewing tradition, home to Shepherd Neame Brewery, Britain’s oldest family-owned brewery, established in 1698.
The town’s market has been active for over 900 years and continues to be held in the town centre. Visitors can explore the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre, which houses a museum and the town’s Visitor Information Centre. Nearby Brogdale Farm hosts the National Fruit Collection, featuring thousands of fruit varieties and seasonal festivals.
Transport links include a railway station with services to London and the Kent coast, and proximity to the historic A2 road, once part of the Roman Watling Street. Faversham’s natural surroundings include the South Swale Nature Reserve, popular for birdwatching, and the Oare Gunpowder Works country park, preserving the town’s industrial past.
