About Gillingham, Kent

Gillingham, Kent, is a historic town forming part of the Medway conurbation alongside Chatham, Rochester, Strood, and Rainham. Its name, dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, means “the homestead of Gylla’s people,” reflecting its Old English roots. The town grew around the parish church and the military barracks known as the Great Lines, with its development closely linked to the nearby Chatham Dockyard, a major naval base until its closure in 1984.

The town’s rich maritime heritage is commemorated by the Chatham Naval Memorial on the Great Lines, honouring Royal Navy personnel lost in the World Wars. Gillingham also features historic sites like the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, a Grade II* listed building dating back to the 13th century, and Fort Amherst, part of the defensive lines built to protect the dockyard.

Gillingham’s High Street has long been a commercial hub, hosting markets since the 14th century. Although it has faced challenges from out-of-town shopping centres and changing retail trends, community initiatives like the Love Gillingham campaign aim to revitalise the town centre through regeneration and public engagement.

Sport plays a significant role in local culture, with Gillingham Football Club based at Priestfield Stadium and facilities such as Medway Park Sports Centre offering swimming, trampolining, and other activities. The Strand Leisure Park provides outdoor pursuits including sailing and an open-air pool by the River Medway.

Transport links include the historic Watling Street road and Gillingham railway station, which has served the town since 1858. The town benefits from proximity to the M2 motorway and the Medway Tunnel, enhancing connectivity within Kent and beyond.
