Greatstone-on-Sea in Kent Village Guide

About Greatstone-on-Sea, Kent

Greatstone-on-Sea is a coastal village situated on Romney Marsh in Kent, England. Positioned east of New Romney, it lies within the civil parishes of New Romney and Lydd. Initial plans in the 1920s for extensive housing and facilities were only partially realised, but significant development during the 1960s and 1970s established a sizeable community.

The village features St Peter’s Church, built in the 1960s as a daughter church of All Saints, Lydd. A small cluster of shops serves residents and visitors, with the village adjoining Lydd-on-Sea at one end. Education is provided by Greatstone Primary School, with most pupils progressing to nearby secondary schools including The Marsh Academy, Folkestone School for Girls, or Harvey Grammar School.

Transport links include two main roads connecting Greatstone to Lydd, Lydd Airport, East Sussex, and New Romney. The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway passes through the village, stopping at Romney Sands station. Historically, Greatstone-on-Sea had its own national railway station from 1937 to 1967. Local bus services are operated by Stagecoach in East Kent.

The beach at Greatstone-on-Sea gained wider recognition after featuring in the BBC’s Teletubbies series. The village is also notable for its proximity to the RAF Denge Sound Mirrors, historic acoustic devices used during wartime.
