About Greenhithe, Kent

Greenhithe is a village in the Borough of Dartford, Kent, situated on the River Thames between Dartford and Gravesend. Historically, its waterfront was a hub for transshipping commodities like corn, wood, chalk, and lime, which supported the nearby cement industry in Swanscombe. The village briefly flourished as a Victorian tourist resort, marked by the now-lost Greenhithe Pier, and was once visited by Queen Victoria in 1863.

The village has strong maritime connections, notably as the long-term base for the Thames Nautical Training College’s ships named Worcester, which trained Royal and Merchant Navy officers from the 19th century until the 1970s. Greenhithe also played a role in naval history, with ships like HMS Erebus and HMS Terror departing from here on the Franklin expedition.

Ingress Abbey, a Tudor-Gothic mansion built in 1833 on the site of a medieval manor, is a notable landmark. The estate features a grotto known as the cave of the seven heads, believed to incorporate stones from the old London Bridge. The grounds are thought to have been landscaped by Capability Brown.

Greenhithe’s economy has shifted from river trade to modern developments, benefiting from proximity to the M25 motorway, Ebbsfleet International station, and the Bluewater shopping centre. The area is part of the Thames Gateway regeneration, which has expanded residential neighbourhoods and business estates.

The village was once home to the advanced Ingress Abbey Paper Mills, established in 1908 and producing newsprint until its closure in 1992. Today, Greenhithe is well connected by rail and bus services, linking it to London and surrounding towns.
