About Halling, Kent

Halling is a village nestled on the North Downs in northern Kent, stretching over three miles along the River Medway. It comprises Lower Halling, Upper Halling, and North Halling, lying parallel to the historic Pilgrims’ Way. The village’s name has uncertain origins, with possibilities including Old English terms relating to halls or manors.

Archaeological finds reveal Halling’s ancient roots, including the Neolithic “Halling Man” skeleton discovered near the railway station and evidence of Roman settlement through burials and tiles. The earliest written record dates back to the 8th century, when land was granted to St. Andrew of Rochester.

Halling’s industrial past is marked by chalk mining and processing, which shaped much of the village’s development. Chalk was quarried by hand before World War II and transported via the River Medway for cement manufacture. Although the factories have closed and the last chimney was demolished in 2010, the chalk industry influenced local architecture and infrastructure.

Among Halling’s notable landmarks is the ruin of a former Bishop’s Palace, once a luxurious residence for pre-Reformation Catholic bishops. The village also features World War II riverside defences and remnants of a former ferry crossing near the church of St John the Baptist. A striking blue lake, formed by chalk quarrying, is fed by a large spring and contributes to the local water supply, known for its exceptional purity.

Upper Halling hosts a modern pumping station, filter beds, and an underground reservoir, reflecting the village’s ongoing connection to water management. Halling is accessible via the Medway Valley railway line and lies between the M20 and M2 motorways, linking it to surrounding towns and London.
