Hildenborough is a village nestled in the River Medway valley near the North Downs in Kent, England. Its name, originating from Old English, means ‘pasture on or by a hill’, reflecting its rural setting within the area known as The Weald. The village lies just two miles northwest of Tonbridge and five miles southeast of Sevenoaks.
The village has a notable history, particularly during World War II when it served as a refuge for evacuated London children and was close to key airfields like RAF Biggin Hill. Several wartime incidents occurred locally, including the crash-landing of enemy aircraft and the presence of emergency landing strips. The village also endured flying bomb attacks in 1944, which caused damage to buildings such as St John the Evangelist Church.
St John the Evangelist Church, consecrated in 1844, was built to serve the local population who found it difficult to attend the parish church in Tonbridge. Nearby, Hildenborough Gospel Hall dates back to around 1850, and the village hall hosts a Buddhist group, reflecting a variety of religious communities.
Hildenborough’s historic buildings include Foxbush House, now home to Sackville School, and Mountains Country House, a Grade II listed Victorian building used as a private school and event venue. The village once had significant local employers like GlaxoSmithKline and Fidelity Investments, though these have since closed.
