About Hythe, Kent

Hythe is an historic market town on the edge of Romney Marsh in Kent, with roots dating back to Roman times and its name meaning ‘landing place’ in Old English. The town features a mix of medieval, Georgian, and Victorian architecture, including the neoclassical Town Hall completed in 1794 and the Saxon/Norman parish church of St Leonard perched on a hill.

Once a bustling Cinque Port with a busy harbour, Hythe’s waterfront has largely silted up over the centuries. The Royal Military Canal, built during the Napoleonic Wars, runs through the town and adds to its distinctive character. Nearby, three Martello Towers—historic coastal defences—still stand, with one converted into a house and others owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Hythe’s rich history includes connections to Saltwood and Lympne Castles, with Saltwood Castle notably linked to the plot to murder Thomas Becket in 1170. The town was also home to the Mackeson Brewery, famous for its stout, and hosts the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a charming 15-inch gauge line running along the coast.

Sport and leisure are well catered for, with clubs for horse riding, sailing, cricket, and more. The town supports a Non-League football team, Hythe Town F.C., and has a vibrant cultural scene centred around the Tower Theatre. Local media includes several newspapers and community radio stations, reflecting a lively community spirit.

Notable residents have included novelist Elizabeth Bowen, art historian Kenneth Clark, and novelist Daphne du Maurier. Hythe also features in popular culture as the setting for the BBC One series Back to Life.
