About Iden Green, Kent

Iden Green is a small village nestled in the Kent countryside, near Benenden and within the Tunbridge Wells Borough District. Its name, derived from Old English, means ‘a pasture of green by the yew trees’. The village grew along Mill Street, a Roman road linking Hastings to Maidstone, and expanded notably in the 16th century during the Wealden cloth industry boom, with many original workmen’s cottages still standing.

The area boasts a rich history, with Iron Age artefacts and a Roman paved ford, protected as a site of national importance. Hemsted Park, once home to the Guldeford family and visited by Queen Elizabeth I, later became part of Benenden School. The estate’s dispersal in the early 20th century marked a significant change, with Lord Rothermere contributing generously to local amenities, including recreation grounds and allotments.

Iden Green lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterised by rolling sandstone ridges and clay vales. It is surrounded by towns such as Cranbrook, Tenterden, and Hawkhurst. The village community centres around the Iden Green Pavilion, a village hall that once served as a church, and the recreational park hosting events and a children’s playground.

The Woodcock Inn, a 17th-century pub with a beer garden, offers a traditional local gathering spot. Nearby, the Iden Green Tennis Club provides outdoor courts and a clubhouse. The village is served by nearby railway stations at Staplehurst and Etchingham, with primary schools located in Benenden and Sandhurst.

Religious life is centred on the evangelical Iden Green Congregational Church, rebuilt in 1954 after wartime damage. Notable past residents include Victoria Cross recipient William Robert Fountains Addison and artist Alfred Cohen, reflecting the village’s diverse heritage.
