About Iwade, Kent
Iwade is a village in Kent, located just two miles north of Sittingbourne. Established in the late Medieval period, it originally served as a settlement linking Watling Street to the coast via Key Street. Evidence suggests a moated dwelling existed here between the 13th and 15th centuries, highlighting its historical significance.
A notable discovery in Iwade is a prehistoric henge dating from around 6000 BC, uncovered during housing development. This circular earthwork measures approximately 30 metres in diameter, offering a glimpse into ancient human activity in the area.
The village church, dedicated to All Saints, dates back to the 13th century and is a Grade I listed building. It underwent restoration in the late 19th century, including the addition of a south porch. Nearby, a Grade II listed World War II heavy anti-aircraft gunsite remains intact, one of only nine in the country preserved in its original state.
