About Kearsney, Kent

Kearsney is a village in Kent, now part of the Dover urban area, located just over two miles northwest of Dover town centre. It lies between the parishes of River and Ewell and is bordered by Kearsney Avenue, London Road, and Sandwich Road.

The name Kearsney originates from an old Saxon term referring to a place where watercress grows. The village grew around the Railway Bell Hotel, situated on the main Dover to London road, and developed close to Kearsney railway station, which served the nearby parish of River and Temple Ewell.

A notable feature is Kearsney Abbey, which, despite its name, was not an abbey but a country house set in extensive grounds beside the River Dour. The river, more a large stream, historically powered local flour and paper mills, including Crabble Mill a few miles downstream in River.

Near the railway station stands a Catholic convent, adding to the village’s historical landscape. Interestingly, Kearsney College, a well-known boys’ school in South Africa, takes its name from this Kentish village.
