Kemsing is a historic village nestled on the scarp face of the North Downs in Kent, approximately 20 miles south-east of Central London. The village is known for its connection to Saint Edith of Wilton, born here in the 10th century, with a well at the village centre dedicated to her and reputed to have healing properties. The village’s parish church, St Mary the Virgin, dates back to Saxon times and features notable medieval and early 20th-century stained glass and woodwork by Ninian Comper.
The village centre retains a charming historic character, with a cluster of picturesque cottages surrounding the well and the Grade II listed St Edith’s Hall, built in 1911. This hall, adorned with a statue of Saint Edith and an inscribed clock, served as a hospital during the First World War. Nearby stands the Grade II listed war memorial designed by Godfrey Pinkerton in 1921.
Kemsing lies within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the North Downs Way footpath running just north of the village. The chalk grassland of Kemsing Down nature reserve, managed by Kent Wildlife Trust, offers scenic walking opportunities. The village also has a rich sporting tradition, centred around The Common Field and the Sir Mark Collet Sports Pavilion, supporting cricket, football, tennis, and squash.
The village’s history includes associations with notable figures such as King Henry II and the Boleyn family, and it was once a stop on the Pilgrims’ Way to Canterbury. Kemsing’s heritage is reflected in its numerous listed buildings, including one Grade I and several Grade II* structures, preserving its architectural and cultural legacy.
