About Kemsley, Kent

Kemsley, now a suburb of Sittingbourne in Kent, has a rich history dating back to 893 when the Danes built a fortress known as ‘Castle Rough’ on Kemsley Down. The site later became notable for its medieval fortified manor house remains, offering a glimpse into the area’s distant past.

By the late 19th century, Kemsley was a modest settlement with cottages beside a brick works, situated close to the historic Castle Rough site. The village’s transformation began in 1924 when Edward Lloyd established the Kemsley Paper Mill. This mill was strategically located by a creek, enabling direct importation of raw materials and marking a significant industrial development.

Alongside the mill, Lloyd constructed a garden village to accommodate his workers, forming the heart of modern Kemsley. The industrial heritage is further preserved through the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway, a narrow gauge railway originally serving the paper mill, now operating as a tourist attraction.

Kemsley railway station lies on the Sheerness Line, linking the area with the surrounding region. The village’s industrial roots and historical landmarks make it a place of interest for visitors exploring Kent’s heritage.
