Kingsgate is a small hamlet nestled within St Peter’s parish in Broadstairs, Kent. Its name commemorates a notable landing by King Charles II on 30 June 1683, with the term ‘gate’ referring to a natural cliff gap. Other monarchs, including George II in 1748, have also used this secluded cove.
A key historical feature of Kingsgate is Holland House, constructed between 1762 and 1768 by Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland. The house was accessed from the beach through a distinctive stone arched gate, originally called Barthelmas Gate before being renamed Kings Gate.
The hamlet overlooks Kingsgate Bay, where cliffs rise to the north, offering dramatic coastal views. Nearby landmarks visible from the bay include Kingsgate Castle and the North Foreland lighthouse, adding to the area’s historic charm.
