Knockholt, Kent

Knockholt is a village and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, situated on the top of the dip slope of the North Downs. The village offers scenic views over London and is surrounded by fields forming part of the Green Belt, with mixed arable farming in the area. Its name originates from the Anglo-Saxon term āc-holt, meaning “oak wood,” reflecting the village’s historical connection to oak trees.

The parish area has remained largely unchanged since medieval times, covering around 1,700 acres. Knockholt comprises two main parts: the area near the parish church and school, and Knockholt Pound. St Katharine’s Church, a Grade II*-listed building, serves as the Anglican parish church, while the London Road Evangelical Church, originally a Methodist chapel from the late 19th century, stands near Knockholt Pound.

During World War II, Knockholt Pound was home to the Ivy Farm Communications Centre, a Radio Intercept Station that played a key role in decoding non-Morse radio traffic for Bletchley Park. This historical significance is noted in literature on wartime intelligence.
