Lenham, Kent

Lenham is a charming market village and civil parish located on the southern edge of the North Downs in Kent, about nine miles east of Maidstone. Its picturesque village square hosts two public houses, including a hotel, alongside a couple of restaurants and a tea-room, offering a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and locals alike.

The village is historically significant, with roots dating back to at least 850 AD and a market established in 1088. Lenham’s High Street features several listed buildings, reflecting its rich heritage. Notable landmarks include the Grade I listed parish church of St Mary, rebuilt in the 14th century after a fire, and the nearby Tithe Barn. A striking 200-foot chalk cross carved into the North Downs commemorates those lost in both world wars.

Lenham lies at the source of the Great Stour River, with the Stour Valley Walk beginning here and leading towards Ashford, Canterbury, and the English Channel. The village also marks the start of the River Len, which flows west to join the River Medway at Maidstone. The Pilgrims’ Way and North Downs Way pass along the ridge north of the village, making it a popular spot for walkers.

Community life in Lenham is vibrant, supported by groups such as the Friends of St Mary’s Church, Lenham Meadows Trust, and a local film club. The village also hosts HAMS Productions, an amateur dramatic society known for its annual pantomimes and plays. Lenham is served by its own railway station on the Maidstone East Line, providing easy access to the surrounding region.
