About Lower Higham, Kent

Lower Higham, part of the historic village of Higham in Kent, retains a distinctly traditional character with roots tracing back to Saxon times. The area is notable for the original parish church, St Mary’s, built in the 13th and 14th centuries and located in the hamlet of Church Street. Though redundant since the 1980s, this medieval church is preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust and features some of Kent’s oldest woodwork, including a 14th-century pulpit. It also holds a connection to Charles Dickens, whose daughter was married there in 1860.

The village’s history is further enriched by the nearby Gad’s Hill Place, the former home and death place of Charles Dickens. Gad’s Hill was once infamous as a haunt for robbers and is referenced in Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1. Dickens purchased the house in 1856, and a Swiss chalet where he composed his works once stood in its garden, now relocated to Eastgate House in Rochester.

Lower Higham lies close to the disused Thames and Medway Canal, which opened in 1824 and once linked the Thames at Gravesend to the Medway at Strood. Although the canal ceased operation in 1934, there are ongoing plans to restore it for leisure use. The village is also near Higham Marshes, an important wetland habitat with waymarked walking trails that attract wildlife enthusiasts.
