Lympne, Kent

Lympne is a village perched on former sea cliffs overlooking the Romney Marsh plain in Kent. Its history stretches back to Roman times when it was known as Portus Lemanis, featuring a Saxon Shore fort whose remains lie at the foot of the cliffs. The fort, once called “Stutfall” in Anglo-Saxon times, hints at the village’s long-standing strategic importance.

Among Lympne’s historic landmarks is Lympne Castle, dating from the late 13th century, which stands alongside the Church of St. Stephen. The church, with parts from the 11th to 14th centuries, is a Grade I listed building and contains monuments to notable local families. The castle includes a medieval wellhead and was restored in the early 20th century by architect Robert Lorimer.

Lympne Aerodrome played a significant role in early aviation history, hosting light aircraft trials and record-breaking flights in the 1920s and 1930s. Although the airport has since closed, its legacy remains part of the village’s character.

Nearby, Port Lympne Zoo adds to the area’s appeal, situated west of the older village core. The village’s setting offers views across the expansive marshland, with landmarks overlooking the Palmarsh sailing club lake to the south.

Lympne also features in literature and film, notably in H. G. Wells’s “First Men in the Moon” and the 1945 film adaptation of Noël Coward’s “Blithe Spirit.” These cultural references underline the village’s enduring presence in English storytelling.
