Maidstone, Kent

Maidstone, the county town of Kent, is a historic market town situated 32 miles east-south-east of London. The River Medway flows through its centre, linking Maidstone with Rochester and the Thames Estuary. The town’s name possibly derives from stones set in the river for rinsing clothes, and evidence of settlement dates back to before the Stone Age.

The town played a significant role in English history, including during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 and the English Civil War. Maidstone’s economy evolved from heavy industry to light industry and services, with historic industries such as paper making, brewing, and stone quarrying. The site of the former Fremlin’s Brewery is now a major shopping centre, Fremlin Walk.

Maidstone boasts a rich cultural scene with several museums, including the Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, Kent Life open-air museum, and the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages. The town is also home to the Maidstone Studios, the UK’s largest independent television studio complex.

Sport is well represented with Maidstone United football club, Maidstone Hockey Club, and Maidstone Rugby Football Club among others. Mote Park, the town’s largest park, offers recreational facilities and has hosted county cricket matches.

Transport links include three railway stations with services to London and surrounding towns, as well as bus routes connecting Maidstone with Ashford, Canterbury, and Tunbridge Wells. The town’s architecture features historic buildings such as All Saints’ Church and the Archbishop’s Palace, both Grade I listed.
