Margate, Kent

Margate is a historic seaside town on the north coast of Kent, stretching over two miles and including areas such as Cliftonville and Westbrook. With a population of over 63,000, it has been a popular holiday destination for Londoners for at least 250 years, known for its sandy beaches and maritime heritage. The town was once part of the Cinque Ports and has a proud seafaring tradition dating back to the Middle Ages.

The Dreamland amusement park, home to the Grade II* listed Scenic Railway roller coaster, is a central attraction. Margate also boasts the Turner Contemporary art gallery, which opened in 2011 to revitalise the town and celebrate its connection to the painter J. M. W. Turner. Nearby, the Old Town offers a cluster of independent shops and historic buildings, including a Tudor house from the 16th century.

Margate’s cultural scene includes the Theatre Royal, the second oldest theatre in the country, and an annual jazz festival. The Shell Grotto, decorated with millions of shells in intricate patterns, and the Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, a large sea bathing pool refreshed by the tide, add to the town’s unique character. The Margate Caves, rediscovered in the late 18th century, have recently reopened to visitors.

Transport links include a railway station with services to London Victoria and St Pancras, and frequent bus routes connecting to nearby towns. Margate experiences a mild oceanic climate with relatively low rainfall and high sunshine hours, earning it the nickname “Sunny Margate.” The town continues to evolve, blending its rich history with contemporary arts and community initiatives.
