Meopham is a large linear village in north-west Kent, stretching approximately seven miles and often cited as one of the longest settlements in England and Europe. Its name, first recorded in 788, originates from “Meapa’s village.” The village’s history includes a 12th-century Benedictine priory hospital and three medieval manor houses—Meopham, Dodmore, and Nurstead—that once governed the parish lands.
The main village is divided into four settlements: Hook Green, The Street (Dodmore), Meopham Green, and Culverstone. Hook Green features a small triangular green surrounded by listed buildings such as Weavers Cottage. The Street is the oldest area, home to the 14th-century parish church of St John the Baptist and remnants of the medieval Dodmore manor, including The George Inn, where the manorial court once convened. Meopham Green boasts the largest remaining village green, historic 18th- and 19th-century buildings, two pubs, and a cricket pitch with a history dating back to 1776. Nearby stands Meopham Windmill, built in 1801 and now fully restored to working order. Culverstone Green, the southernmost settlement, retains some older houses and the notable Lacknut House, dating from the early 19th century.
Beyond the main village, the parish includes Nurstead, with its 14th-century church and Nurstead Court, and Camer, a small settlement near Camer Park. The village lies on the North Downs’ dip slope, reaching elevations of 150 metres. Meopham Windmill, constructed by James Killick in 1801, operated by wind until 1929 and by engine until 1965, reflecting the area’s agricultural heritage.
The parish churches include the Grade I listed St John the Baptist and St Mildred’s in Nurstead, alongside other historic churches such as Mount Zion Baptist Church (1828) and the Roman Catholic Church of St Paul (1965). The village’s rich history is reflected in its architecture and longstanding traditions, making Meopham a place of notable heritage in Kent.
