Mereworth is a village in Kent, England, notable for its early 18th-century Palladian architecture. The village was relocated by the Honourable John Fane, later 7th Earl of Westmoreland, to enhance the view from his estate. He commissioned the construction of Mereworth Castle, designed by Colen Campbell, which overlooks the village.
The village church, dedicated to St Lawrence, was rebuilt in the Palladian style after the original was demolished by Fane. This church is a Grade I listed building, reflecting its architectural and historical significance.
The Wateringbury Stream runs through Mereworth and once powered a watermill, the site of which now lies within the grounds of Mereworth Castle. The village has connections to notable figures such as Charles Lucas VC, the first recipient of the Victoria Cross, who is buried in the churchyard of St Lawrence’s Church.
Mereworth Castle has been home to several prominent individuals, including members of the Browne family and Francis Fane, a peer from the early 17th century. The village’s rich history is closely tied to its architectural heritage and the legacy of its former residents.
