Newnham is a historic village nestled in the Syndale valley of Kent, near the medieval market town of Faversham. Its origins stretch back over a thousand years, with the church of SS Peter and Paul and the George Inn pub both standing for more than 600 years. The village once thrived on hop farms, orchards, and wood industries, with many residents living and working locally until the mid-20th century.
The village retains much of its traditional charm, featuring Tudor dwellings, Victorian cottages, and several listed buildings within a conservation area. Notable architecture includes Calico House from the early 17th century and a 19th-century vicarage rebuilt alongside the church. The valley road, once a Norman highway linking Roman Watling Street to the Pilgrims’ Way, hints at Newnham’s deep historical roots.
Newnham lies within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where building is strictly controlled to preserve the rural landscape. The village’s oast house, once used for drying hops, has been converted into a private home, and the nearby Syndale Vineyard hosts the local Hopdaemon brewery.
A unique 1937 water softening plant, recognised for its architectural significance, stands near the village’s pumping station, reflecting Newnham’s role in supplying water to surrounding areas. Despite modern changes, Newnham’s landscape and buildings continue to echo its rich agricultural and social history.
