Northfleet, located on the northern reach of the Ebbsfleet River where it meets the River Thames, has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The area was known as Fleote by the Saxons and appears in the Domesday Book as Norfluet. Its strategic position on the Thames made it a hub for industry and transport, with the Roman road Watling Street (now the A2) running through it.
The town was once home to Rosherville Gardens, a popular 19th-century pleasure garden set in a disused chalk pit, featuring Greek temples, terraces, and a theatre. At its peak, it attracted thousands of visitors arriving by steamboat, though it closed in the early 20th century. Nearby, the harbour formed by the Ebbsfleet River inlet was used since Roman times and later supported flour milling and cement production.
Northfleet became a significant centre for cement manufacturing from the late 18th century, with James Parker establishing kilns in 1796 and William Aspdin pioneering Portland cement production in 1846. The industry thrived until the last plant closed in 2008, leaving behind the Blue Lake, a flooded chalk pit. The town also developed a notable shipbuilding industry in the late 18th century, with Thomas Pitcher’s yard producing merchant and naval vessels until 1860.
During the Napoleonic Wars, plans were made for a Royal Navy dockyard at Northfleet Hope, but these were never realised. In the 20th century, Henley’s Cable Works operated on the site of the former Rosherville Gardens, contributing to wartime efforts such as Operation PLUTO.
Northfleet’s historic parish church, St Botolph’s, dates from the 14th century and contains one of Kent’s oldest carved oak screens. The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of the Assumption, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, features a distinctive tower once used as a navigation aid during the Second World War.
