Otford is a historic village in Kent, nestled on the River Darent, just three miles north of Sevenoaks. Its roots stretch back over 3,000 years, with evidence of Iron Age farmers, a substantial Roman villa, and Saxon settlements. The village name may derive from “Ottansford,” meaning the ford of a local figure named Otta, or possibly from Offa, the King of Mercia, linked to the Battle of Otford in 776.
A notable landmark is Otford Palace, built in 1514 by Archbishop William Warham. King Henry VIII stayed there in 1519 and later took ownership. The village pond, central to Otford’s layout, is surrounded by pubs, cafes, and shops, and its unique one-way system was once named Roundabout of the Year.
Otford’s Anglican parish church, St Bartholomew’s, stands alongside Methodist, Roman Catholic, and Evangelical churches, reflecting its varied religious heritage. The Otford Heritage Centre, housed in the old schoolhouse, showcases local archaeology and history, including a scale model of the Archbishop’s Palace and artefacts spanning Roman times to the modern era.
The village lies on the historic Pilgrims’ Way and the North Downs Way, making it a key stop for walkers exploring the Darent Valley. Otford’s conservation area contains around forty listed buildings and part of the scheduled monument of the Archbishop’s Palace, preserving its rich architectural heritage.
