Rainham in Kent is a town situated on the northern edge of the North Downs, descending to the natural harbour of the River Medway. Its location places it about 39 miles east of London, with the ancient Watling Street (now the A2) running through it. The town is served by the Chatham Main Line railway and lies close to the M2 motorway, which skirts its southern boundary.
Historically a separate village, Rainham expanded significantly after the arrival of the railway in 1858 and later with electrification in 1959. The Park Wood estate, developed mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, replaced one of the last large areas of relict woodland in North Kent. The area known as Rainham Mark reflects an old ecclesiastical boundary, while Macklands, to the north, retains links to the Mackay family, former owners of the Grade II listed Macklands Manor House.
The parish church of St Margaret stands as a notable historic building, alongside the Roman Catholic church dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury. Rainham is also home to the world’s first oast house theatre, where the Rainham Theatrical Society stages regular performances, adding a unique cultural dimension to the town.
Open spaces include the Riverside Country Park, which fronts the River Medway at Rainham Creek and features the promontory known as Horrid Hill. Nearby, the Berengrave Local Nature Reserve occupies a disused chalk pit, offering a glimpse of the area’s natural heritage amidst the urban landscape.
