River is a village nestled in a steep wooded valley carved by the River Dour in Kent, just two miles north of Dover. The valley splits into the Dour and Alkham Valleys, with the latter featuring the seasonal Drellingore stream, typical of chalk downland landscapes. The area’s chalk grassland and common land above Kearsney Abbey offer views towards Dover and its castle.
The village’s history is closely tied to milling, with the River Dour once powering several flour and paper mills. Crabble Corn Mill, built in 1812 and formerly known as Mannering’s Mill, remains operational as a visitor attraction and restaurant. Other mills have either been demolished or repurposed, with one disused mill site near Kearsney Abbey now serving as a habitat for water birds like grey wagtails and kingfishers.
River features two historic churches: the 11th-century Anglican parish church of St Peter & St Paul and a Methodist church dating back to 1834. The village also boasts green spaces such as the River Recreation Ground and Kearsney Abbey gardens. Despite its name, Kearsney Abbey was a manor house built in the early 19th century, demolished around 1960, with only the billiard room remaining.
