About Sandgate, Kent

Sandgate is a village in the Folkestone and Hythe district of Kent, England, with a population of around 4,600. It is known for Sandgate Castle, a historic Device Fort, and the nearby Shorncliffe Redoubt, a Napoleonic-era earthwork fort linked to Sir John Moore and the 95th Rifles.

The village has literary and cultural connections, having been home to H. G. Wells at Spade House and the birthplace of comedian Hattie Jacques. St Paul’s Church stands adjacent to the Saga building, which occupies the site of the former Embrook House.

Sandgate was once an urban district before becoming part of Folkestone in 1934, regaining civil parish status in 2004. The Sandgate Branch railway line, opened in 1874 and closed to passengers in 1951, left behind remnants such as a tall overbridge near Hospital Hill.

The village shares a sister city relationship with Sangatte in France, and its name has been used for a suburb in Brisbane, Australia, alongside the nearby Shorncliffe.
