About Sheerness, Kent

Sheerness is a historic port town located on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, England. The town originated in the 16th century as a fort to protect the River Medway and later developed into a Royal Navy dockyard established in 1669, which operated until 1960. Sheerness played a key role in naval defence and shipbuilding, with notable features including the world’s first multi-storey building with a rigid metal frame, the Sheerness Boat Store.

The town’s seafront boasts a sandy and shingle beach awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and safety, complemented by flower gardens and a promenade.

Sheerness has a strong industrial presence centred around the Port of Sheerness, one of the UK’s largest car importers, handling fresh produce and other goods. The port area supports industries including steel production, pharmaceuticals, and furniture manufacturing. The town’s economy has evolved since the dockyard’s closure, with ongoing efforts to restore historic buildings and maintain its maritime heritage.
