About Shoreham, Kent

Shoreham is a village in Kent, nestled in the Darent valley, an area with roots stretching back to the Stone Age. Its name likely derives from the Saxon word for a steep slope, reflecting the local landscape. The village is home to three traditional pubs, including The Samuel Palmer, named after the artist who lived here in the early 19th century.

The village has a rich wartime history. Shoreham was the most bombed parish in the UK during the Second World War, partly due to nearby military installations and a dummy airfield designed to mislead enemy bombers. The Shoreham Aircraft Museum commemorates the Battle of Britain and houses relics from crashed aircraft, including a Dornier Do 17Z shot down nearby in 1940.

A notable feature is the Shoreham Memorial Cross, a chalk hillside cross cut in 1920 to honour local men who died in the First World War. The village war memorial, a Grade II listed structure, stands opposite the church and bears an inscription referencing the cross. The memorial remains incomplete, with ongoing efforts to add missing names.

Shoreham also hosts an annual duck race on the River Darent each May Day, where entrants race model ducks along the river to raise funds for local charities. The village’s history includes early references to cricket from 1668 and a past papermaking industry that ended in 1928.

Several notable figures have connections to Shoreham, including the writer Lord Dunsany, who lived at Dunstall Priory, and the theologian William Wall. The village’s railway station links it to London and Sevenoaks, while local bus services provide further connections.
