Shorne is a village and civil parish located three miles east of Gravesend in Kent. The area is notable for its well-drained land and the Shorne Marshes, which extend to the Thames Estuary. These marshes form part of the North Kent Marshes on the Hoo Peninsula and are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Evidence of ancient settlement is found in Shorne’s barrows, including Shorne Barrow and Randalls Wood Barrow, which date back to the Stone Age. Randall Manor, a 14th-century manor, once stood here, with its remains now preserved within Shorne Woods Country Park.
Upper Shorne is a conservation area featuring thirteen listed buildings and several others of historical interest. Pipes Place on Forge Lane is a Georgian-style house linked to the Maplesden family, local landowners from the 18th century. Nearby stands St Katharine’s Chapel, restored in the late 19th century by George Arnold, a former Mayor of Gravesend.
