About Snodland, Kent

Snodland is a historic town in Kent, nestled on the River Medway between Rochester and Maidstone, just 34 miles from central London. Its origins date back to at least 838, with early mentions in Saxon charters and the Domesday Book. The town grew significantly in the 19th century, driven by lime quarrying and paper manufacturing, industries that shaped its development and population growth.

The town boasts several notable landmarks, including the 12th-century All Saints Church, a Grade I listed building, and the Norman St Benedict’s Church in nearby Paddlesworth. Tudor Mulberry Cottages and Woodlands Farmhouse, dating from the 15th century, reflect Snodland’s rich architectural heritage. A Roman villa site near the church adds to the town’s historical interest.

Snodland is surrounded by natural beauty, with the North Downs to the west and the River Medway to the east. Leybourne Lakes Country Park, created from former gravel pits, offers fishing and wildlife watching, while the Burham Marsh nature reserve lies across the river.

The town’s cultural footprint extends to references in music and literature, including works by Samuel Beckett and the band Soft Machine.
