Snowdown is a small hamlet near Dover in Kent, England, notable for its historical connection to the Kent coalfield. It was once home to one of the four chief collieries in the area, Snowdown Colliery, which ceased operations in 1987. The remnants of the mining heritage, including capped mine shafts and winding engine houses, mark the landscape and reflect its industrial past.
The hamlet comprises roughly 54 houses and is part of the civil parish of Aylesham. Snowdown’s location within the Dover district places it amidst a region rich in history and rural charm. The nearby Snowdown railway station once served the colliery, linking the community to the wider Kent coal mining network.
Snowdown’s quiet setting was disrupted in recent years by a tragic event in 2021, when PCSO Julia James was found murdered in woodland near the hamlet. This incident brought national attention to the area and remains a significant moment in its recent history.
Despite its small size, Snowdown’s legacy as a former mining community and its place within the Kent coalfield make it a point of interest for those exploring the industrial heritage of South East England.
