Sole Street is a hamlet within the parish of Cobham in Kent, an area rich in history dating back to at least the 10th century. The parish includes notable historic sites such as Cobham Hall, a Grade I listed manor house with gardens designed by Humphry Repton. Cobham Hall now serves as a private boarding school for girls and retains much of its ancient estate.
A 15th-century hall house from Sole Street was carefully dismantled and reassembled at the Weald and Downland Living Museum, preserving its medieval architecture. The nearby parish church of St Mary Magdalene, dating from the 13th century, is renowned for its exceptional collection of monumental brasses, including effigies of the Brooke and Cobham families.
Cobham’s heritage also features the Darnley Mausoleum, a pyramid-topped structure built in 1786 within the former deer park of Cobham Hall. The village and its surroundings have long-standing connections to notable figures such as Charles Dickens, who set part of The Pickwick Papers in the local Leather Bottle pub.
The parish encompasses areas of open space like Cobham Park, with extensive woodlands, and Jeskyns, a former farm transformed into a green space by the Forestry Commission. Sole Street is served by a railway station on the Chatham Main Line, linking the area to London and beyond.
