About South Darenth, Kent

South Darenth is a village in Kent that grew around the Horton Kirby mill, originally built in 1820 by Henry Hall. Initially a flour mill, it later expanded into a paper mill, notable for diverting the River Darent through a small tunnel. The mill produced high-quality paper used for magazines and plans. A large chimney, constructed in 1881 and extended in 1918, remains a Grade II listed structure. The mill closed in 2003 and has since been redeveloped for housing, with a Co-op Food supermarket housed in one of the listed mill buildings.

The village’s railway heritage includes the Chatham Main Line viaduct, built in 1859-60 with ten arches designed by Victorian architect Joseph Cubitt. Farningham Road station, opened in 1860, lies just west of the village. The station once featured sidings and a water tank, now removed. The area was once threatened by the proposed High Speed 1 rail line, but plans were diverted away from South Darenth.

South Darenth also had a fire station for over a century, originally serving the paper mill. The station grew alongside the village, operating with horse-drawn carts before acquiring modern appliances. Despite strong community opposition, the fire station closed in 2013 due to budget cuts.

Nearby, the former Farningham home for little boys was established in the 1860s on the ‘cottage homes’ principle. Its chapel, once topped with a spire, lost this feature in the Great Storm of 1987. The home closed in 1961 and later reopened as a retirement village in 1978.
