Southborough, located just north of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its history stretches back to prehistoric times, with archaeological finds including arrowheads, stone axe heads, and burial sites from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Castle Hill Iron Age Fort, dating to 315 BC, is a notable ancient landmark in the area.
The town’s name originates from its status as the South Borough within the domain of Tonbridge Castle after the Norman Conquest. Southborough was once part of the Royal forest of Southfrith, reserved for royal hunting until the mid-16th century. Over centuries, the manor passed through various hands, including the Crown and notable families such as the Audleys and Staffords.
Southborough’s industrial heritage is rich, particularly in ironworking from the mid-16th century, with water-powered furnaces operating on local streams. The area later became known for gunpowder manufacturing and brickmaking. Cricket ball production was a significant industry here until 1978, reflecting the town’s long association with the sport, which has been played on Southborough Common for over 200 years.
Southborough Common itself, now a conservation area owned by the Town Council, covers 71 acres and has been central to the town’s community life. The common’s historical significance is preserved through local efforts and it remains a focal point for cricket and other activities.
The Royal Victoria Hall Theatre, opened in 1900 as England’s first municipal theatre, was a cultural landmark until its closure and demolition in 2017. It has since been replaced by a new community hub, completed in 2021, continuing Southborough’s tradition of communal gathering spaces.
