About St Mary in the Marsh, Kent

St Mary in the Marsh is a small village nestled in the heart of Romney Marsh, Kent. The village centre is home to about forty homes, scattered farms, The Star Inn, and the historic church of St Mary the Virgin. The surrounding landscape is characterised by the stark beauty of marshes and open farmland.

The church of St Mary the Virgin is a notable landmark, with origins dating back to around 1133 AD. It is believed to have replaced an earlier Saxon church known as “Siwold’s Circe.” The building features a three-tier tower made of Kentish ragstone, a chancel extended in the early 13th century, and a spire added in the 15th century. Inside, visitors can find a plaque commemorating Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, who lived nearby and is buried in the churchyard.

Star Cottage, adjacent to The Star Inn, was once home to the renowned playwright, actor, and composer Noël Coward. The village’s quiet charm and historical connections make it a point of interest for those exploring the Romney Marsh area.
