About Stone, Kent

Stone, Kent, known historically as Stone-next-Dartford, is a village with deep roots stretching back to prehistoric times. Archaeological finds include Palaeolithic flint tools and handaxes, with nearby Swanscombe revealing some of Europe’s earliest human remains. The parish also boasts Bronze Age ring-ditches and Iron Age settlements, alongside Roman occupation evidence such as settlements, cemeteries, and artefacts scattered throughout the area.

The village’s medieval heritage is marked by St Mary’s Church, a Grade I listed Gothic building dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, featuring rib-vaulted chancels and remnants of 13th-century wall paintings. Stone Castle, a fortified manor house with a medieval tower and 19th-century Gothic Revival additions, stands as a Grade II listed landmark, now serving as offices.

Stone’s landscape includes chalk and gravel hills rising from the Thames floodplain, with marshy meadows to the north and wooded slopes to the south and west. Historic chalk pits and quarries once supported a thriving cement industry in the 19th century, traces of which remain visible in the form of old kilns and riverside wharves. The Darent Valley Path offers scenic views and glimpses of this industrial archaeology.

Modern Stone blends its historic core with contemporary developments, notably the Bluewater Shopping Centre, one of the UK’s largest retail complexes, located on a former quarry site. Stone Crossing railway station, opened in 1908, links the village to London and Kent, reflecting its role as a commuter hub while retaining its rich historical character.
