About Stowting, Kent

Stowting is a village in Kent, nestled at the southern foot of a chalk hill that forms part of the North Downs. The village is situated beside a chalk spring, with the Roman Road of Stone Street running just over a mile to the east. The Pilgrim’s Way and North Downs Way footpath pass directly through Stowting, offering scenic routes for walkers.

The parish church of St Mary dates back to the 13th century and features flint construction with stone dressings and a distinctive flint tower. It is a Grade II listed building. Nearby, the remains of a Norman Motte-and-bailey castle mound stand as a fine example of medieval fortification.

Stowting’s history stretches back to Anglo-Saxon times, with its name meaning a ‘place characterised by a mound.’ The manor was granted to Christ Church, Canterbury, in 1044. In 1947, the hillside above the village was the site of a tragic Douglas C-47A aircraft crash.

The village includes the hamlets of Stowting Common and Lymbridge Green within its parish. The Tiger Inn, dating from the 1600s, retains historical brewery signage, reflecting its heritage. Stowting Cricket Club, founded in 1895, plays at Dawes Field near the church and school.
