Swanley, Kent

Swanley is a town and civil parish in Kent, located 16 miles southeast of central London, just inside the M25 motorway. Originally a small settlement of cattle farms and woodland, it expanded significantly after the railway arrived in 1861, evolving from a crossroads with three houses into a thriving town. The modern town grew around the railway junction, initially known as Swanley Junction, with the original settlement becoming Swanley Village.

The town has a rich horticultural heritage, centred on the Swanley Horticultural College established in 1887, which influenced local nurseries and florists. Swanley also became a health retreat for Londoners escaping city smog, with several hospitals founded in the late 19th century, some of which later served military purposes during the World Wars.

Swanley Park, covering 60 acres, preserves the town’s rural past with orchards and farm remnants alongside modern recreational facilities including a play park, café, water park, boating lake, and a model railway. The park hosts athletic clubs and community events, attracting around 400,000 visitors annually.
