About Tankerton, Kent

Tankerton, a suburb of Whitstable in Kent, was developed in the late 19th century as a seaside destination linked to the expanding train network. The area was laid out with a grid of streets descending from the shoreline, centred around the Tankerton Estate, which included Tankerton Tower—now known as Whitstable Castle. A small pier once stood here, built in 1894, but it was demolished in the 1910s.

The coastline is notable for its slopes, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of the rare Fisher’s estuarine moth, which depends on the hog’s fennel plant found there. Tankerton boasts a Blue Flag beach, recognised for its high environmental standards, and the colourful wooden beach huts on the grassy slopes are highly sought after, with some having been owned by notable figures.

In 2018, a Tudor-era merchant shipwreck was uncovered in the sand, dating back to 1531. This vessel, linked to the historic Copperas trade, is unique in south-east England and has been protected by Historic England following archaeological assessment.

Tankerton’s economy revolves around tourism, supported by its attractive beach and holiday parks nearby. The area’s history includes a notable 1926 murder trial involving local residents, reflecting a dramatic chapter in its past. The combination of natural interest, historic development, and coastal charm makes Tankerton a distinctive part of the Kent coastline.
