About Teynham, Kent

Teynham is a small village and civil parish in Kent, nestled between Sittingbourne and Faversham, just north of the A2 road. The parish includes the hamlet of Conyer, situated on an inlet of the Swale, the channel separating mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. Other hamlets such as Deerton Street, Frognal, and Teynham Street lie within the parish boundaries.

The village’s name has Anglo-Saxon origins, possibly meaning “land drained by dykes” or “homestead of a man called Tena.” The Roper family, Barons of Teynham since 1616, added the distinctive “y” to the name. Historically, Teynham was notable for its early fruit cultivation; in the 16th century, 105 acres were planted with cherries and apples for King Henry VIII, making it one of the earliest English sites for cherry growing.

Teynham lies on the ancient Roman road Watling Street, and recent archaeological finds include a rare Roman sculpture of the god Triton, discovered near the village. The area was once marshy and unhealthy due to malaria, but drainage efforts eradicated the disease by the mid-20th century.

The village boasts several historic buildings, including the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church, with 15th-century stained glass windows, and other notable structures like Hinkley’s Mill, The Old Vicarage, and Teynham Court. Early Archbishops of Canterbury had residences here, and King Edward III was entertained in the village in the 14th century.

The surrounding landscape remains largely agricultural, with corn, hops, and orchards dominating the southern parish, while the Teynham Levels near the Swale support sheep and cattle farming.
