Thurnham is a village nestled at the foot of the North Downs, just three miles north-east of Maidstone in Kent. The area is rich in history, with archaeological discoveries including an Anglo-Saxon burial ground found at Thurnham Friars in 1913, a 7th-century gold cross uncovered in 1967, and the remains of a Roman house excavated in 1933.
The village is home to the remains of Thurnham Castle, located just north of the settlement. Further north lie the fragmentary ruins of Binbury Castle, a medieval fortified manor house accompanied by a motte. St Mary’s Church, a Norman structure, and Milgate House are both Grade I listed buildings, highlighting their architectural and historical significance.
Bearsted railway station, originally named Bearsted and Thurnham when it opened in 1884, serves the area. The village’s heritage and landscape offer a glimpse into its long-standing past within the Kent countryside.
