About Waltham, Kent

Waltham is a village and civil parish located seven miles southwest of Canterbury in Kent. Historically known as Temple Waltham, it was once associated with the Knights Templar. The village holds a notable place in medieval history, with Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester, having died there in 1262 under suspicious circumstances.

The parish was part of the hundred of Bridge during the reign of Edward III, later merging into the hundred of Bridge and Petham by the 19th century. The local lord held the court leet responsible for appointing a constable for the hundred of Bridge, reflecting the area’s medieval governance.

St Bartholomew’s Church is a Grade I listed building, featuring windows dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Its tower was rebuilt and restored in 1808, preserving its historic character. The church remains a key architectural and historical landmark within the village.
