Wateringbury is a historic village in Kent, nestled near Maidstone along the River Medway. The Wateringbury Stream feeds into the Medway just above Bow Bridge, once powering three watermills, with one still surviving today. The village’s railway station lies on the Medway Valley Line, linking it to the wider region.
The village’s origins trace back to Anglo-Saxon times, with its name meaning “the fortification of the people of Othere.” Wateringbury is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, noting two manors and a church. The stone church of St John the Baptist, likely built on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon church, features a 13th-century chancel and tower.
Wateringbury Place, the largest estate in the village, was rebuilt in 1707 and remains a focal point of local heritage. The village once held a royal charter to host a market from 1311, and several medieval houses still stand, including the Pelicans and the Wardens. The village’s economy historically centred on agriculture, particularly hop growing, which brought wealth and seasonal labourers.
Two breweries operated in Wateringbury from the 18th century until the late 20th century, reflecting its brewing heritage. The village also hosted notable cattle auctions in the 19th century, with shorthorn cattle bred locally fetching high prices internationally. Wateringbury’s conservation area status preserves much of its historic character, complemented by blue plaques commemorating notable residents such as Admiral Sir Henry Ruthven Moore and Dame Ellen Terry.
