Westerham is a historic market town in Kent, situated close to the borders of Greater London and Surrey. Its origins date back to the 9th century, with mentions in the Domesday Book under the name Oistreham. The town’s name means “westerly homestead,” reflecting its Old English roots. The River Darent runs through Westerham, once powering three watermills.
The town boasts a rich heritage, including a 13th-century parish church, St Mary the Virgin, which uniquely displays the royal arms of King Edward VI. Westerham was the birthplace of notable figures such as James Wolfe, a British Army officer commemorated with statues in the town square, and John Frith, a Protestant martyr. Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s family home from 1922, lies on the outskirts and is now a National Trust property.
Westerham has connections to cultural history as well. Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, lived here briefly. The town also played a role in early BBC children’s television, with founders Freda Lingstrom and Maria Bird naming their company after Westerham. Scenes from the 2009 BBC mini-series Emma were filmed nearby at Squerryes Court.
Transport links include nearby Oxted railway station and several bus routes connecting Westerham to Bromley, Sevenoaks, and Tonbridge. The town lies just south of the M25 motorway, with the A25 and A233 roads providing access to surrounding areas. Westerham supports local sports with cricket, football, and netball clubs, and hosts a weekly parkrun on the Squerryes Estate.
