About Wingham, Kent

Wingham is a historic village in Kent, situated along the ancient coastal route from Richborough to London, near Canterbury. Evidence of settlement dates back to the Stone Age, with the village becoming established during Roman times. The Domesday Book records Wingham manor as belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury in Saxon times.

The village boasts several notable historic buildings, including the Grade I listed St Mary the Virgin church, which features architectural elements from the Norman through to Victorian periods. The Dog Inn and The Eight Bells are both Grade II listed pubs dating back to the 13th century, reflecting Wingham’s medieval heritage. In 1286, Archbishop Peckham founded a college here, adding to the village’s historical significance.

Wingham was once served by the East Kent Light Railway, built to support local coal mines in the early 20th century. Although the mines never fully developed and the railway closed by 1951, remnants of this industrial past remain visible. The village is also part of the Miner’s Way Trail, linking the coalfield parishes of East Kent.

Nearby, Wingham Wildlife Park offers a chance to see a variety of animals including tigers, penguins, and wolves, providing a modern attraction close to the village. The surrounding countryside features traditional Kentish villages and historic sites, making Wingham a place rich in both natural and cultural heritage.
