About Worth, Kent

Worth is a village and civil parish in the Dover District of Kent, located just 2 kilometres south of Sandwich. The village is known for its fertile soils, which attracted early settlement during Norman times under the Lords of Eastry Manor. Worth’s parish church, St Peter & St Paul’s, features Norman architectural elements dating back to the twelfth century, reflecting the village’s long history.

Historically, Worth was composed of three boroughs, with only Worth Street remaining as the modern village. In the sixteenth century, the area was noted for its distinctive redbrick housing. The village also has literary connections, being the fictional birthplace of C.S. Forester’s naval hero Horatio Hornblower. A local farm called the Blue Pigeons was once central to smuggling activities, and today the Blue Pigeon Inn stands as a nod to this past.

Local legend holds that King Henry V, after his victory at Agincourt on St Crispin’s Day, disembarked at Worth and fell in love with a local ale-wife, inspiring the name of the Crispin Inn. Worth covers an area of 1,629 hectares and had a population of 992 according to the 2011 Census. The village has maintained a rural character with a low population density.

Ordnance Survey maps from the 19th and 20th centuries show the development of Worth over time. The village’s name is thought to derive from a word meaning “enclosure,” reflecting its origins. Worth’s historical and cultural heritage is evident in its architecture, local inns, and enduring stories.
