About Wrotham, Kent

Wrotham is a historic village in Kent, England, situated on the Pilgrims’ Way at the foot of the North Downs. Located just north of Borough Green and east of Sevenoaks, it lies between the M20 and M26 motorways. The village’s name dates back to 788, meaning ‘homestead of a man called Wrōta’.

The area shows significant Roman influence, with the Wrotham Pinot grape believed to descend from vines introduced by the Romans. St George’s Church, featuring Early English architecture, stands near the site of a former Archbishop of Canterbury’s palace. Wrotham Hill played a key role in the 18th-century Anglo-French Survey linking Greenwich and Paris observatories.

Notable residents have included journalist Peaches Geldof and Field Marshal Henry Hardinge. Wrotham’s blend of historical significance and rural charm makes it a distinctive part of Kent’s landscape.
